The Literacy Racket is a "fake" band I started on April Fool's day when I wanted to be in a psych/garage band but didn't have the time to be in one never mind find members for one. So I started a pretend band in my imagination and created characters for each instrument giving them personalities and playing styles. I also used as inspiration some of the artists and musicians I knew when I lived in Oberlin, OH during the early 2000's. Basically, punk kids sitting around listening to records, reading books, talking art bullshit. Here's the cast I came up with:

"Nasty" Nick Nottingham: Vox, Guitar.
Dizzy Lizzy: Lead Guitar, Vox
Jane Page: Keys, Vox.
Jules Smoothe: Bass Guitar, Vox.
"Handsome" Dick Richards: Drums, Vox

I then wrote a few songs for them to play and recorded the results all myself. The songs were written in pairs to have an A side and a B side like a 7" single (these pretend kids are obsessed with records, after all).
Five of those six songs are collected here along with one new original and four covers. It makes a nice little album. I think the Racket kids would be pleased. If they actually existed.
