lyrics

Like most American kids, Annie dreamt of the city
This is probably because she grew up in the sticks
And since the jobs all left her folks were poor and bereft
And so her mind was set
She was going where the money went
She got a room in a house from Craigslist
She found a job in an ad on Craigslist
She's working hard but the pay is worthless
She's starting to think that this is bullshit

Now Annie's in the city but she's feeling such a pity
Because the money's all spent because it ain't worth a cent
And Johnny's going hungry and he's running out of money
Can't afford the rent and he spent what they lent him and he's going in debt and again they're raising the rent.

The people up at the top look down but they can't see the ground
Where the ants are trying to stay dry in the face of the storm
That was brought along by those at the top
Before they jumped into their brand new security box
And now those foxes in their boxes
they done lockses us all out in the rain
Now Annie gets wet no matter how she tries
She's looking for answers but gets the same old lies
Can't stay in the city because the pay's too low
But it's just empty strip malls lining the road
She looks at where she's been
And where she's going she just don't know
But when it looks like this who knows where the future will go

Now Annie's in the city but she's feeling such a pity
Because the money's all spent because it ain't worth a cent
And Johnny's going hungry and he's running out of money
Can't afford the rent and he spent what they lent him and he's going in debt and again they're raising the rent

They say this place used to be unsafe to walk around at night
You know they say this place used to be unsafe to walk around at night
But now it's full of shops that fit just right
And all the riff raff's been moved out of sight
Got rid of those without a cent
All they had to do was raise up the rents

Now Annie's in the city but she's feeling such a pity
Because the money's all spent because it ain't worth a cent
And Johnny's going hungry and he's running out of money
Can't afford the rent and he spent what they lent him and he's deeper in debt and again they're raising the rent
