about

This album is the result of an automatic writing exercise. Each song was fully written, arranged, and recorded in one hour or less. This means all lyrics and melodies were as close to improvised as possible in an attempt to tap into subconscious thoughts. The other set of limitations imposed on this song cycle was that each song may only use sounds that can be recreated by three voices and three 12 string acoustic guitars (the last songs recorded also included a keyboard part as I felt an additional texture was needed). The final planned influence on its sound is that I wished for it to be reminiscent of Victorian era children's stories and rhymes (I was listening to a lot of early Tyrannosaurus Rex at this time).

The result is a fascinating album with a definite story that is still conveluted even to myself. Certain lyrical themes emerge (cups of tea, the moon, horse drawn carriages) and while each song is self contained they allude to a story of sorts. Here is my reading of it:
The King's dreaming is the source of the river of life for his kingdom but something is stopping whatever keeps the King asleep (something delivered by horse drawn carriage) and if he awakens his kingdom will disappear. The King may be asleep in a castle tower on the moon. The brothers Jasper and Klaus, Hector Hare, Pippi Cutestockings, and Wesley Dormouse are inhabitants of his kingdom that he dreams of. The Queen is aware of all of this and is either keeping the King asleep or trying to wake him. It depends on whom the Bridegroom is and what his relation to the Queen is.
